Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to update you on the College’s continued response to the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). Currently no Barnard or Columbia student, faculty, or staff member has been diagnosed with COVID-19. We want to assure you that the College is closely monitoring and working to prepare for possible disruptions in connection with COVID-19.

The College has established a separate page on its website with details on its response to COVID-19. Please continue to refer to this page as it will be updated regularly to reflect the evolving situation.

As a reminder, symptoms of COVID-19 include fever and lower respiratory illness, such as cough and difficulty breathing. These symptoms may be similar to the flu or the common cold. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia and other complications. If you are experiencing these symptoms or are not feeling well, please stay home from work and call your primary care provider. Employees who have questions about the use or availability of sick leave, leave of absences or work accommodations should contact Human Resources at 646-745-8350. Staff can access additional services from the College’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through Humana.

The College also recommends adhering to the following CDC prevention guidelines

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds several times a day.

  • Avoid touching your face with your hands.

  • Stay home when you’re sick.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with the crook of your elbow when you sneeze or cough.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

We understand how disruptive and concerning this situation is for everyone. For more information, please visit:

Please note that Provost Bell will be sending additional updates to faculty and staff with information on College recommendations, requirements and restrictions on international travel in light of the COVID-19 situation.

As always, please know that we want you to stay healthy, and that your well-being and safety is our top priority.

All the best,

Eileen DiBenedetto, Interim Chief Financial Officer and VP for Finance
Catherine Geddis, VP for Human Resources
