Dear Members of the Barnard Community,
Today we write to you together, as the President, Provost and Dean of the College. This joint message reflects the work we have all been doing — as faculty, staff, students, alumnae and the entire Barnard community — to care for one another during this unprecedented time.
In many ways we are all in this situation together and we truly recognize the intense pressures these circumstances bring to our entire community. We also know that this crisis is affecting our students, faculty and staff in different ways — with each of our living and family situations unique. In recognition of this, we are sharing several changes for the Spring 2020 semester designed to support our academic community during this time.
Cancellation of Virtual Classes March 23-25 / Resumption of Virtual Classes March 26 through Monday, May, 4, 2020
Online classes at both Barnard and Columbia will be canceled from Monday, March 23 through Wednesday, March 25. Classes will resume virtually on Thursday, March 26. This brief hiatus following spring break is intended to allow students, faculty and staff time to settle into their new living and working arrangements. This is also a moment for students and faculty to refine their strategies for teaching and learning online.
Over these three days, the Center for Engaged Pedagogy, the team of librarians and technicians in Instructional Media and Technology Services, and BCIT staff will make training materials and support available to both students and faculty. More information, including pedagogy sessions for faculty and zoom trainings for both faculty and students, can be found on our updated Virtual Class Resources & Instructions page.
All Barnard and Columbia Classes Move to a Mandatory Pass/D/Fail Policy for the Spring Semester
Every student faces unique circumstances in their transition to online learning. By moving to a uniform Pass/D/Fail policy, we aim to create a semester that is as equitable as possible for all our students. When we are together on campus, learning side by side, we have equal access to campus resources that help us to succeed. As we disperse across the globe, each of us faces our own individual challenges — be it connectivity, access to computer hardware and software, demands on our time and attention due to our living situations, family concerns, or health concerns.
A uniform Pass/D/Fail policy helps ensure that we are assessing academic excellence as justly and equitably as possible. Moreover, moving to mandatory Pass/D/Fail allows us to focus our collective attention on what we do best: Teaching excellence that inspires in our students a love of learning, a depth of understanding, and a mastery of techniques and critical thinking skills.
Postponement of Barnard College Commencement on May 18 and Columbia University Commencement on May 20
We are truly sad to announce that commencement for the Class of 2020 will be postponed. We know this news is incredibly heartbreaking to all seniors and their families and friends. Many of you have looked forward to this moment from the time you first stepped foot on campus for NSOP, and we were very much looking forward to both celebrating with you and recognizing your academic achievements. At this point, neither Barnard nor the University is ready to provide details on a rescheduled commencement. We want to take time to consider the various options as they evolve, to include our senior class in this thinking, and to make sure we mark the occasion in a meaningful way.
We end with a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the entire community. We know that all of the recent changes you have had to endure haven’t been easy and we are so proud of how everyone has stepped up to handle the challenges this situation has unexpectedly placed on us. Please know that we are thinking of you and looking forward to coming together as a virtual community in the weeks ahead.

Cada estudiante enfrenta diferentes circunstancias en su tradición a las clases virtuales. Al implementar la política del Pass/D/Fail, esperemos crear un semestre que tome en cuenta las posibles dificultades que pueden enfrentar los alumnos. Cuando estamos en campus, a ladeo del uno al otro, tenemos el acceso a recursos que nos ayudan hacer nuestros trabajos. Al dispersarnos a diferentes partes del mundo enfrentamos dificultades- puede ser conectividad, acceso a una computadora, nuestro tiempo, tipo de vivencia, y nuestra salud.
Las notas Pass/D/Fail ayuda asegurar que podamos recibir una excelente educación lo mas justo e igual posible. Además, este sistema de nota nos ayuda enfocarnos en el aprendizaje, entendimiento y maestría de la materia.
Aplazamiento de Ceremonia de Graduación Barnard 18 de Mayo y Ceremonia de Graduación Columbia 20 de Mayo
Lamentamos anunciar que la ceremonia de graduación para la clase del 2020 será pospuesta. Entendemos que esta noticia es muy triste para los seniors al igual que para su familia y amigos. Muchos de nosotros hemos esperado este día desde el primer día de NSOP, y esperamos celebrar con ustedes sus logros académicos.
