Dear Barnard Community,
This semester has been an unprecedented one for us all. Thank you for your support of one another and the College during this unsettling time.
Most students are now off campus as they finish their classes virtually. Dean Grinage and everyone on her team — from Residential Life & Housing to Primary Care Health Services — are doing a truly fantastic job supporting students whose circumstances necessitate that they remain at Barnard for the remainder of the semester.
Many Barnard staff are working remotely, with the exception of essential employees in public safety, facilities, finance and mail services, health services,and residential life and housing. I cannot thank these front-line staff enough for their selfless work to keep our campus and community safe and healthy throughout this time.
Today we learned of our first positive diagnosis of COVID-19 in the Barnard community. Barnard remains in close contact with the New York State Department of Health and New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to make sure we (and those who may have had direct contact) are following the appropriate guidelines.
COVID-19 continues to spread around the globe and, here in New York City, there is now widespread community transmission. It is likely that we will continue to see a growing number of COVID-19 cases in the Barnard and Columbia community.
Please take care of yourself and each other. I know many of you have questions about your belongings, room and board refunds, 2020 Commencement and more. You can find a lot of information on our COVID-19 website (this site), which is updated daily. Also know that my team and I are working steadily through the most pressing issues at this time. Our first priority has been to provide individualized financial assistance to students on need-based aid in leaving campus or returning home from study abroad. We will move on to other issues as soon as possible.
Virtual classes will resume after spring break, Monday, March 23, and faculty are working hard to ensure the success of this new mode of learning. I remain heartened by the fact that Barnard faculty are some of the best scholar-teachers and are truly up to the challenge of remotely delivering a world-class education.
In this ever-changing world where simple pleasures such as stopping for coffee or grabbing a bite out to eat with friends and family has been curtailed, I hope that online classes and all of the virtual programs that Barnard is offering this spring will provide a sense of community for our students, faculty, staff, and alumnae. We all benefit so much from each other and now is the time — more than ever — to cherish these connections.

Estimada Comunidad Barnard,
Este semestre ha sido sin precedentes para todos nosotros. Gracias por apoyarse unos a otros y a la Universidad durante este momento desconcertante.
